Before You Begin: Before we start, make sure you have the right tools for the job. Check out our previous post, “Know THIS Before You Spend $1 on Stamping,” to ensure you have the appropriate stamping plates for your nails, the right stamper, and suitable stamping polishes.

Essential Tips for Mastering Stamping:

  1. Choose the right surface. When stamping, it’s crucial to work on a hard, flat surface like a desk or table. Avoid stamping on soft surfaces like carpet floors, as they don’t allow for even pressure distribution, which can lead to uneven or incomplete designs.
  2. Be quick and prepared. Stamping requires speed and precision. To ensure the best results, set up everything in advance. This includes having your polish, stamping plate, and scraper ready. Apply the polish to the plate, scrape off the excess, and pick up the design with the stamper as quickly as possible. Remember, these steps are the most time-sensitive!
  3. Use a plastic scraper. While it may be tempting to use a metal scraper, it’s best to avoid them as they can damage your stamping plates. Instead, opt for a plastic scraper. Believe it or not, a Subway loyalty card can make an excellent scraper!
  4. Tackle transfer issues with a sticky base coat. If you find that the polish on your stamper is drying too quickly and not transferring well to your nail, try using a sticky base coat. Maniology’s sticky base coat is highly recommended, but Orly’s bonder base works great too. Apply a layer of the sticky base coat over your polish or directly on your nail to help the stamped design adhere, even if it has already dried on the stamper.
  5. Experiment with different stamping techniques. Not all stampers are created equal, and they may require different techniques. For example, a clear, firm stamper might need to be rolled over the stamp, while a clear jelly stamper may work best with a straight up-and-down motion. Experiment with your stamper(s) to find the technique that works best for you.

A Few More Helpful Tips:

  1. Expect stamping to be difficult at first. You’ll be pleasantly surprised when it becomes easier and exceeds your expectations.
  2. If you get frustrated, take a break or stop for the day. Nothing will work right once you’re aggravated.
  3. Don’t throw away your stamping supplies on a whim. You’ll likely want to try again later!
